A must buy for a TRUE Transformers fan. Only bad thing is the lack of "that" soundtrack, you know which one I mean....
You got the touch..... you got the POWWWWWEEERRRRRRR.
- Original voice actors reprise rolls (get it?)
- 60fps fighting goodness
- Fantastic visuals (the cartoon never looked this good)
- Period thematic soundtrack
- Deep but accessiible combat
- A faithful nostalgia trip
- Game's a little pricey for the content
- Just five characters (three types) on the roster
- Inventory management can get tedious
- Mouth animation looks a little wierd
- Can't sell anything if you don't have enough money (a bug, no doubt)
Overall if you love Platinum fighting games this one's a solid experience. Rock solid framerates, tasty visuals and a lot of fun. $50 is a lot to ask, but the quality of the product is high. I'll get another 12 hours out of this, but I don't exactly rush around.
Verdict: For $12 via Humble Bundle, totally worth it. Grab it on sale.
Do I recommend this? Yes I do. As someone that grew up with the original cartoons and toys, this game really hits the spot. Its a good old fashioned button masher beat em up, kinda like Streets of Rage, but in a 3D world rather than a side scroller. Ok, the story took me 4 hours to complete (short even at my slow and steady old man pace), but there is so much to like about this game. The animation is excellent, the way the characters are drawn is true to the cartoons, and the animations are smooth and good to watch. There is a bit of simple weapon crafting to do if you like, and, believe it or not, the five Autobots you get to use is actually enough. Also, as many of the original voice actors were used as possible, even on the less impotant characters, making it as close to the original series as could be. I think this is a well polished effort. Enjoyable, simple and fun, and something you can pick up and play from where you leave off. There is even a Marvel style after credits scene too!
It's a platinum beatemup with some admittedly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ firearms and a few overused bland maps.
The cream of this game is in fighting the iconic Decepticons. Every major battle plays differently and you can tell they put the brunt of their effort into making these major fights a blast. The voice work, atmosphere, and plot are exactly where they need to be, a flawless emulation of the classic cartoon.
There's a lot of pointless grind hidden behind the regular campaign. Rather than spend time padding the game out wouldn't it have been better to make the regular campaign longer?
I still vastly prefer the earlier fps-centric Cybertron games. Nothing could come close to those two stellar games.
Cup of coffee in-hand, I thought I'd try this game out. It was a pure nostalgia impulse-buy during this year's Summer Sale.
Without any idea what to really expect, I dove in. Buttery-smooth graphics, original cartoon voice cast, I basically got to play with my old Transformers again. This *WAS* my every Saturday morning. I had almost every one of these toys.
Teenage son walks in, "Dad, what's for dinner?"
*Looks at clock*
I spent my Sunday playing as a lightning hammer-wielding, fire-breathing, robot T-Rex, and I don't regret one minute of it.
I am pleased. Well done, TRANSFORMERS: Devastation. Well done.
would ROLL OUT again
Dear Platinum Games.. Can we get a Voltron or GI Joe game? Thundercats? He-Man?
The top down missions are completely stupid though. That's my only real complaint.
Having finished it now, I wanted to add that the writing is surprisingly good. Transformers games are usually such a mess of fanservice quotes that they've just gotten old. Devastation maintains the spirit of the old Transformers while feeling like something new.
Yeah it's like five hours long but it has a ton of replayability and HOLY CRAP is it a steal at $12.50
I was a bit sad that there was no Decepticon campaign, but it was still kickass.
